Kanye West dilahirkan di Atlanta, Georgia, di mana ia tinggal bersama kedua orangtuanya. Ketika ia berusia 3 tahun, mereka bercerai. Ia dan ibunya pindah ke Chicago, Illinois. Ia bersekolah di Polaris High School, American Academy of Art, dan Columbia College Chicago, namun kemudian putus sekolah untuk memusatkan perhatian pada karier musiknya. Ia telah menjadi produser rekaman untuk Jay-Z, Common, Mobb Deep, Jermaine Dupri, The Game, Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson, Eminem, dan John Legend.
